Ginebra and its music

In the center of the Valle del Cauca is located one of the richest cities in gastronomy. Ginebra is synonymous with ‘arroz atollado’ (a kind of sticky rice), deep fried plantain toasts, hojaldras, but especially ‘sancocho de gallina’ (colombian chicken and vegetable soup), a dish that identifies us as Colombians and Valle del Cauca’s natives. The history says that ‘sancocho’ was created as a result of a cultural fusion between Spaniards, Indians and Africans, giving rise to a variety of preparations that change depending on the region. But in these fertile lands, it is distinguished by its delicious smoked seasoning, accompanied by rice, plantain toast, ’Aguapanela’ (colombian typical beverage) and salad. All of it comes with the smiles and the good reception of the cooks who have been preparing this delicacy for years.

In addition to being a culinary jewel, Ginebra is known for being the home of Benigno Nuñez, better known as the "Mono Nuñez", a composer, performer and inveterate lover of the "bandola", an essential string instrument in Colombian Andean music. His innate talent and his interpretative capacity led him to be one of the most important references for Andean folklore. In his honor, the ‘Festival de Música Andina Mono Núñez’ (Mono Nuñez Andean Music Festival) is held here every year, an ideal setting to enjoy the town’s fair and stay at one of the farms with a similar architecture to the one in which the artist grew up.
